Course Description:

MTEC 223 Strategic Management in the New Economy

At the end of this course, students will be able to identify a company core competency, match a company competitive advantage and a strategy, and translate a corporate strategy into functional strategies.

 

MTEC 224 Strategic Management: Value Chain & Core Competencies

At the end of this course students will be able to use the value chain analysis to define the core competency of a firm and formulate the appropriate strategy. This will be done through case analysis from the IT and IA industries.

 

MTEC 225 Strategic Management: Strategy Simulation

At the end of this course students will be able to implement the decision- making process in formulating strategy and evaluate the consequences of their decisions through the use of simulation game.



Course Objectives:

MTEC 223

  • Understand the importance of Strategy and Why it matters to Organizations·
  • Describe and implement the four stages of the strategic management process.
  • Differentiate between corporate, business and functional strategies.
  • Describe the strategies followed by diversified companies, multinationals, and high-tech companies.

 

MTEC 224

  • Conduct a case analysis.
  • Implement the value chain analysis in order to define a company core competency.
  • Describe the main characteristics of the videogame and telecommunications markets.

 

MTEC 225

  • Implement the decision-making process in formulating their strategy.
  • Evaluate the viability of their strategy
  • Understand the challenges of competing in an international environment
  • Evaluate the costs and benefits of outsourcing
  • Understand the strategic issues in managing innovation


Delivery Method:

Computer-Mediated Classroom (CMC)

In this course delivery model Students discuss weekly readings and course topics in an online conferencing system. Weekly learning activities also include a Web presentation that integrates readings with resources provided on external web sites or CD-ROMs. Students may be assigned to teams of 4-6 to work on team projects or participate in team conferences. The product of team activities may be presented and discussed with the whole class using the online conferencing system. Assessment is based on assignments, individual and group projects, and participation in online discussions.



Learning Activities + Evaluation:

*Please note these are the minimum expectations for each Course on a weekly basis.

MTEC 223:

Online Presentation: 3 to 4 hours

Online Conferencing: 2 hours

Offline Reading: 1 hour

Face-to-Face: 0 hours

Assignments: 1 hour

Projects: Techweek project: 6 hours

Total Student Hours: 7-8 hours per week and 6 hours for the Techweek project

 

MTEC 224:

Online Presentation: 1 hour

Online Conferencing: 2 hours

Offline Reading: 2 to 3 hours (reading and analyzing the cases)

Face-to-Face: 0 hours

Assignments:

Projects: 2 hours

Total Student Hours: 8 hours

 

MTEC 225:

Online Presentation: 1 hour

Online Conferencing: 4 hours in each unit (discussion regarding the decisions to be made for each round)

Offline Reading: 2 hours (reading the user’s guide of the case) in unit 1

Assignments: 1 hour (solving some min-cases)

Projects: 6 hours (Techweek: Final report explaining their decision during the game)

Total Student Hours: 6 hours per unit

 

Methods of Evaluation

MTEC 223:

The Students will be assessed on a combination of individual assignments, on-line conferencing, team assignments and an individual Techweek project. In addition we will include a peer and self-evaluation to be handed-in during Techweek.

MTEC 224: The Students will be assessed on a combination of individual assignments and on case analysis done in team. In addition we will include a peer and self-evaluation to be handed-in during Techweek.

MTEC 225: The Students will be assessed on a combination of team assignments, individual mini-cases and a Techweek report. In addition we will include a peer and self-evaluation to be handed-in during the Techweek.
