Course Description:
TECH 118 2D Visual Representation
This course addresses issues of mark making as it applies to both physical and digital media. Examples, both historical and contemporary, highlight key concepts related to 2D representation. Weekly projects closely reflect the structure of the unit presentations, progressing towards more team-based activities.
TECH 119 3D Visual Representation
This course introduces classical and alternative notions of space and modeling, facilitated by digital media. Beginning with a historical background in linear perspective, the weekly presentations begin to suggest more conceptual models for envisioning 3D space.
TECH 120 Interactive Visual Representation
This course supports the development of an interactive time-based group project centered on multimedia, user interactions and medium of delivery. The units in this course discuss narrative concepts, color and composition as meaning, and modes of perception and reception.
Course Objectives:
TECH 118
- Identify historic themes, practices, and assumptions of 2D representation in preparation for studio practice.
- Begin to develop a methodology for interaction between physical and digital modes of production.
- Apply and adapt principles of collage and montage to the design and construction of 2D projects.
TECH 119
- Understand the relationship between traditional forms of linear perspective and contemporary digital approaches.
- Recreate static 3D models based on direct 2D, 3D, or physical references, and animate sequences using these models.
- Explain the basic fundamentals underlying most 3D movement applications.
TECH 120
- Understand the difference between linear and non-linear narrative and its relation to interactive environments.
- Develop strategies for creating interactive projects with consideration to navigation, composition and color.
- Learn to work effectively within team-based and collaborative learning environments.
Delivery Method:
Studio Lab (SL)
In this course delivery model, students meet once per week in a laboratory environment to work on projects under the mentorship of an instructor. Learning that would traditionally occur in a lecture is instead supported in a Web presentation that includes multimedia and interactive elements. Weekly face-to-face meetings and online conferences enable students to view and critique each other’s work. Some courses using this model offer an optional Open Lab where students can receive additional learning support. Assessment is primarily based on project work.
Learning Activities + Evaluation:
*Please note these are the minimum expectations for each course on a weekly basis.
ALL: Web presentation: 1 hour
Studio lab and workshop sessions: 3 hours
Open lab or home activities and projects: 2.5 hours
