“It is important that I will enjoy the work I do. Working part-time in the Coop program has given me practical experience and helped me focus my career choices.”

Before entering SIAT, all I knew about computers was how to use Microsoft Word. My software application skills now include Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver – all of which are essential to pursuing a career as a graphic designer or website developer. In fact, many of my courses required that I produce some sort of website. This has not only resulted in a working portfolio to show potential employers, it has given me the confidence to take on a contract to redesign a website for an all-female chorus.

I also participate in the Coop program and am currently working part-time at the SFU Kinesiology department. This is practical hands-on experience that you just can’t simulate in a classroom. Equally invaluable is the team-based approach to learning at SIAT. I have acquired excellent cooperation, listening and leadership skills, which are important attributes to future employers, and have developed many strong and lasting friendships with my peers.
