25th Annual Fall Semester TA/TM Day 2010 ~ The Teaching Orientation Program

The Learning and Instructional Development Centre invites experienced SFU teaching assistants and tutor markers to apply to lead workshops at the 25th Annual Fall Semester TA/TM Day 2010 ~ The Teaching Orientation Program on Friday, September 10, 2010 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at SFU Burnaby. This orientation day is intended for new and veteran teaching assistants and tutor markers (and grad students interested in being a TA or TM one day).
 
WORKSHOP LEADER'S RESPONSIBILITIES
• Workshop preparation (concurrent workshops will run 75 minutes with approx. 30 people per session)
• Required to attend a planning meeting prior to TA/TM Day (June, 2010)
• Leading the workshop on September 10, 2010
 
POSSIBLE WORKSHOP TOPICS
* Note:  this is merely a list of possible topics.  Applicants may propose other titles, including discipline-specific and advanced topics.
 
• improving students' writing skills
• reflective practice in teaching
• facilitating effective discussions
• helping students in distress
• using technology in teaching
• active learning in labs and tutorials
• creating an inclusive classroom
• academic integrity/honesty
• surviving your first tutorial
• voice and presentation skills
• evaluating student work fairly and efficiently
• setting the right tone in your classes
• helping students think critically & work cooperatively
• the role of an international TA/TM
• diversity in the classroom
• cooperative and/or collaborative learning
• conflict resolution

SALARY
• TAs and TMs selected to lead workshops will be paid the current GTA2 hourly rate.

• Then, fill out the application form (printable pdf) at https://webserver.lidc.sfu.ca/tep/spring-10/getPdf.php?c_id=124 and return it with a one page outline by the application deadline.

SUBMISSION REVIEW AND SELECTION
Submissions will be reviewed by the TA/TM Day program committee. Criteria by which submissions will be assessed are available below to guide the development of your proposal. The TA/TM Day organizers may approach applicants to request changes to their proposals to better fit TA/TM Day needs.
 
CRITERIA FOR SUBMISSION REVIEW AND SELECTION
• Clarity and coherence of submission
• Relevance to TA/TM Day
• Relevance and usefulness to the intended audience
• Presentation approach and level of participant engagement in the session
 
SUBMISSION DEADLINE
• Please submit your application form and one page outline as an email attachment (pdf) to Christine_Kurbis@sfu.ca with 'Fall TA/TM Day Proposal' in the subject line.
• The submission deadline is Friday, April 16, 2010.
