Chantal Gibson's art featured in From the Soul juried exhibition
posted: july 27. 2010
SIAT faculty member Chantal Gibson is one of two BC artists featured in From the Soul, an art exhibit currently at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. With more than 160 works by 50 artists, the exhibition represents the largest single juried display of art by African Canadian artists. The Proust Questionnaire, one of three mixed media pieces selected for the show, challenges the limitations of the open-ended questionnaire, a method commonly used in sociological research to collect qualitative data. Using found objects and artifacts from popular culture, the altered book explores the artist’s ability to communicate the complexity of cultural identity through a narrative reimagining of the famous questionnaire, a cultural practice once traditionally located in a white space of discourse and privilege. The exhibit is on display at the Royal Ontario Museum until August 13, 2010.
