Tendrils part of Cultural Olympiad
posted: february 5. 2010
Congratulations to Thecla Schiphorst and collaborator Jinsil Seo on "Tendrils" a new interactive wearable artwork featured at the Code Live Opening Exhibition Feb 4th 2010 at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Code Live is a part of the Cultural Olympiad International Exhibition of Digital Art located at Emily Car, Great Northern Way and the downtown Vancouver Public Library.
Tendrils is an interactive kinetic garment that responds to collective touch. Lush and quirky, the Tendrils garment is reminiscent of an active and intelligent skin that responds by shivering and 'alighting'. These skin-life responses are actuated by a series of small, inter-connected motors and light that reflects the inner flow of the energetic nervous system of the garment. Based on biological structures that alter their structural form as a response to touch, Tendril's subtle movements reflect its ecological connection to our larger movements as a whole.
Schiphorst and Seo collaborated with SIAT undergraduate students: Lisa Guo, Kyle Sakai, Kyle Jung, Moein Sabouhiyan, Yigit (Matt) Karakilic, Michael Chang and designer Meta Vaughan.
