A summer school that students actually enjoy: Teenagers in Digital Media Boot Camp put their creativity, imaginations to use Article by Marke Andrews, Vancouver Sun. Published: Friday, July 18, 2008
Among those teaching secondary students how to develop digital media
and video games at the Digital Media Summer Boot Camp is Magy Seif
el-Nasr, an assistant professor at the School of Interactive Arts and
Technology (SIAT) at SFU Surrey. Magy and Patrick Pennefather—who is a faculty member at the Master's of DIgital Media (MDM) program at Great Northern Way campus—collaborated on developing the curriculum for the Boot Camp and are delivering it as a three week intensive workshop program. The camp is funded by EA , and directed by Christa Ovenall and Gerri Sinclair at the MDM program.
The group of 24 students in the camp visited SFU's Surrey campus on
July 18 for a tour of the SIAT research labs and a gaming demonstration led
by Seif el-Nasr. They were welcomed by graduate students and faculty working on projects in their labs, and had a taste of what it's like to combine academic research with the applied building of media.
