Assistant Professor in Game Design & Devlopment

School of Interactive Arts and Technology - CLOSED

Position Type: Tenure Track

Applicants for this tenure track position should have a teaching and research focus on game design and development. They should have a strong potential for research and scholarship with games coupled with excellent applied skills and expertise in one or more of the areas of:

  •  computational aspects of games
  •  game development and delivery platforms
  • game prototyping and development, or
  • the dynamics of game design and player experience

SIAT is a vibrant, multidisciplinary program that integrates the arts, design, science and technology. SIAT’s teaching and research draw upon fields ranging from media arts, electronic games, design and information technology. SIAT offers degrees at a bachelor, master and doctoral level. The School currently enrolls about 800 undergraduates and approximately 120 graduate students, some 60 of whom are at the doctoral level.

SIAT is located in purpose-built, state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories at SFU’s Surrey campus. Simon Fraser University at Surrey is the University’s newest campus located in the greater Vancouver region of British Columbia. The area is home to Canada’s cultural and entertainment industry and much of its digital media production. The region’s rich cultural, natural and intellectual resources make it one of the world’s most desirable places to live and work.

SIAT works as a unit of the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT), which additionally includes the School of Communication, The School of Contemporary Arts, The Master of Publishing Program and the Master’s in Digital Media Program (MDM).

Qualifications

Applicants should have a terminal degree in their discipline (normally a Ph.D. in computer science, engineering, games studies, media studies, interactive arts, cognitive sciences or a related discipline), having studied:

  • computer games
  • artificial intelligence
  • machine learning
  • digital film and video
  • computer graphics and animation
  • sound design
  • virtual environments
  • new media arts
  • design or related areas

Candidates should have teaching experience at the undergraduate level and have high potential for instructional innovation. Tenure track faculty are expected to develop research programmes attractive to external funding and to be responsive to collaboration with other faculty and graduate students. Faculty members must have a high degree of technological literacy regardless of their disciplinary background.
