Transition
The transition from University into your chosen career path can be smooth, but it can also be challenging. Prepare yourself for this transition. Know what you want, and figure out the steps you need to take to get there:
- The SFU Cooperative Eduation Program (Co-op) is designed to provide you with relevant, paid work experience, and helps you make the transition to the workforce when you finish school.
- Seek out internship opportunities in your field of interest, as these will give you a network of contacts as well as some applied experience in your field (unpaid internships can be just as valuable as paid ones!)
- Take advantage of International exchange and field school opportunities. These help to expand and internationalize your resume and portfolio, and they also demonstrate a maturity and ability to adapt that will be valuable when competing for a job.
- Build a Portfolio - whether digital or printed, a portfolio is an absolute MUST when it comes to competing for a job. Be prepared to talk about your work, and showcase examples.
- Get advice from SIAT alumni. SIAT has a partnership with Ubiq Visuals , an entrepreneurial company started by SIAT alumni. Bookmark our community notice board & find out when their workshops are being held.
- Take advantage of SFU's Career Services programs.
- Bookmark the SIAT Job Board and familiarize yourself with the types of jobs posted, and what they are looking for. Strive to develop the appropriate skills and qualities, so when you start looking for a job you will be ready!
